ok so i’m sorry upfront if this is a sensitive topic that i shouldn’t speak about. however i had this sudden realization like last week and now it’s stuck in my head. you deserve to know it too. so there’s these silicon valley tech bros that talk a lot about transhumanism [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism]. That’s basically a movement that wants to improve your body somewhat through the help of technology, such as brain implants, cyborg bodies, etc… Well, isn’t transgender medical care a form of transhumanism as well? It surely does make use of technology, after all the girl pills and such come from laboratories (i’m not sure how exactly they’re produced but i guess it’s with the help of genetically engineered bacteria that produce the substances). So basically it feels a lot like people who get transgender care are kind of the first line in the movement to transhumanism. Isn’t that cool? or idk what else to say. Anyways the realization is fascinating because most of these transhumanists are deeply republican for some reason. And they also hate against transgenderism for some reason? despite it literally being an application of the type of technology that they advocate for so heavily.

The Elder Scrolls Arena let you play as a black woman in 1992. Name another game that did that. Pretty much every game has offered a world where both races and sexes participate equally, and no one really cares (Morrowind’s racism is always made alien and upsetting thematically). In Morrowind you can’t be a lesbian with Ahnassi (although the guy who wrote The Lusty Argonian Maid is an equal opportunity HR disaster). One of the rare characters Oblivion bothers to spend time on in a faction quest line is very clearly gay. Skyrim everyone is pan. And a lot of this is just the same in Adventure Construction Set a series Howard explicitly took inspiration from. The game doesn’t really give that much of a shit about what you look like. It’s far more effort to code in racism, when you start with that kind of open world model.

He’s a guide dog, so obviously very smart in some ways, but in other ways he’s very much still a dog. He’s still terrified of thunder and fireworks. While he’s normally aloof with occasional fits of cuddliness, when it’s loud outside he tries to climb into my skin. I wish I could tell him “You’re fine, dude. The thunder is outside and you’re inside” in a way he understands. But if you’ll permit me a linguistic tangent, you could take the concept of “talking dog” in a bunch of different directions. - Give him phonetically articulate human speech, but leave his mental faculties otherwise unchanged. He’d express his simple animal needs in a way that happens to correspond to words in a human language, and I would likewise be able to articulate simple concepts to him in a way he understands. Honestly not that far off from the array of push buttons thingy that we saw on YouTube a few years ago. - Make him fully sapient, but leave his vocal tract untouched, incapable of articulating human speech, but with the mental faculties to link symbols to meanings and form recursive ideas. A bunch of my constructed languages use this as a premise, talking dogs (or doglike aliens) that still sound like dogs.
