Robuste Pflanzen trotzen zwischen erkalteter Lava und an den Küstenrändern Heimaeyjars den Extrembedingungen. Die Salzmiere, ein Nelkengewächs, scheidet über Drüsen Salz aus und verankert sich mit meterlangen Rhizomen im Dünensand. Das Löffelkraut besiedelt als Pionier Lavaböden: Seine frühe Blüte nutzt kurze Vegetationsfenster, während Wurzeln Nährstoffe aus verwittertem Tuffstein lösen. Abgeworfene salzige Blätter bereiten dabei den Boden für nachfolgende Arten vor.

Common Scurvy grass (Cochlearia officinalis) beginning to flower along the coast. As the name suggests, this was used as a treatment for Scurvy in the past due to its high levels of vitamin C. Unless you think you're coming down with Scurvy, I wouldn't bother trying it as tastes pretty rough 🤢

Scurvy Grass (Cochlearia officinalis) beginning to flower. Usually one of the earlier plants to flower along the coast, it is high in vitamin C and was used to treat Scurvy on long sea voyages. I've tried a taste myself but will wait until I've actually got Scurvy next time 🤢
