For the second week in a row, Houston Mayor John Whitmire has announced increased traffic law enforcement along select freeways in the city in an attempt to address concerns about road rage and reckless driving.

Houston mayor launches another traffic enforcement initiative, focusing on SH 288 and South Loop 610

Mayor John Whitmire announced in a social media video that traffic enforcement would be “enhanced" along the two freeways. Last week, the focus was I-45 and I-69/U.S. 59.

TxDOT is taking control of the toll lanes on the Harris County portion of State Highway 288, which will come at a $1.7 billion up-front cost for the agency but could eventually result in lower rates for Houston-area drivers.

TxDOT to spend $1.7 billion to take control of State Highway 288 tollway in south Houston

Ending the 52-year agreement with Blueridge Transportation Group will allow "future toll rates to be significantly less" along the 10-mile corridor, according to the state transportation agency.
