A search came up with the information that Russell died last year, which makes me sad. But I will always remember and appreciate being fortunate enough to have had the chance to be friends with him, even on a periphery level, and to have heard him talk about and share his knowledge and opinions about so many things he was passionate about. #RussellMerritt /5 end

So I posted about having seen the new play #UnbrokenBlossoms last night. It brought back a lot of memories because I'd seen and studied the film when I was in the Film Studies program at Cal (UC Berkeley).

There was a visiting professor one year who had a class that sounded interesting. The class was being taught by #RussellMerritt, who was an acknowledged expert on D.W. Griffith. I really enjoyed the class, and Russell was knowledgeable and excited about everything he talked about. /1
