As the holiday "gift-giving season" surrounds us, let's consider memberships to local cultural and educational sites as an idea. Instead of giving money to big corporations and loading up with more "things", you'd be supporting a local nonprofit, and giving the gift of a year's worth of experiences and adventures.
I sell memberships at our local zoo. A zoo membership helps support conservation education for all ages, from Kinderzoo classes for the tots, to school field trip programs, to ZooTeen and Urban Ecologist programs, to the Butterfly Beltway project and ZooMobile visits across the community. Your zoo membership enables the zoo to have the backing of steady year-round support.
There are so many other various kinds of memberships, that you can easily find one to fit your gift recipient's interests, whether a membership to your local science museum, art museum, or history site. Just in my own local #RochesterNY area, there is the Seneca Park Zoo, the Rochester Museum and Science Center, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Strong Museum of Play, the George Eastman Photography Museum and Dryden Theater, the Genesee Country Village Museum, the Ganondagan Seneca Historic and Cultural Center, and many more.
Look around and see what's available in your own local area! Boycott Amazon, Target, and all their ilk, and instead support your local cultural scene!
