Monday, July 29th, 1968: Associated Rediffusion, the ITV weekday franchise holder for London and the surrounding areas, goes off air after agreeing to merge with ABC Television following the Independent Television Authority (ITA) franchise review of 1967. Rediffusion's weekday slot would be taken over by Thames Television, while LWT (London Weekend Television) would fill the weekend slot.
Associated Rediffusion launched on September 22nd, 1955 as the very first commercial TV channel in Britain, following the passing of the Independent Television Act of 1954 in order to combat the monopoly held by the BBC since 1936. Associated Rediffusion would rebrand to Rediffusion London in 1964.
