It was released by #PortraitRecords as Lauper's debut single from her first solo album, #ShesSoUnusual (1983), which was released four days earlier. Lauper's version gained recognition as a #feministAnthem and was promoted by an #MTVVideoMusicAward–winning music video directed by #EddGriles.
