I wonder if I could get #NixOS running nicely on my #PixelSlate ...
It is a nice little device, but chrome os lets it down. I currently have it running Arch and it runs my 3D printers. But, Arch has some weird issues on it. If NixOS runs well maybe I'd actually use it.
Yay, progress! I now have the #PixelSlate behaving a bit better. Power management is behaving, and the Arch specific oddities are resolved (slow boot, hang on shutdown)
Still no working audio or camera, but I think I can live with that.
So, next up I get to patch dwm to resize the work area when onboard is running so that the on screen keyboard is usable.
I think I'll be reasonably happy with that setup.
Okay, so... The #pixelslate is great with #linux and I absolutely love the hardware. The screen is beautiful, the touchscreen is nice. Only downside is that the speakers don't work and the camera doesn't work, because this hardware was only intended to run ChromOS.
On the other hand, I could buy a used X1 Fold. The Arch wiki lists all its hardware as functional, and I love its design. But, even a used one is close to $1k
So, what do I do?
So, I decided to try the Ubuntu live image on the #PixelSlate and it seems to appears to have a whole unique set of issues but I'm also kinda impressed.
It handles screen rotation (but gets it upside down, oops). It appears that sleep and even auto brightness are working properly.
Still no sound though, so... poop.
I have an idea, for a 3D printed stand for my #PixelSlate that would attach to either side of my #quefrency split keyboard.
The goal being to have the tablet at a nice angle in front of the keyboard...
But I don't really have the spoons to build that right now.
