“On the wall at #RockingHorse, behind the counter, there’s a copy of the #GoBetweens’ second single, #PeopleSay, released in 1979. It’s in its original bright yellow #sunflower sleeve and is selling for the princely sum of $650. Forster looks up at it with glee and smiles.

“Absolute bargain,” he declares.”

1000 Day Album Challenge (#27) The Meters: Rejuvenation (1974) [27.01.24]

I feel so good inside / 'cause I just kissed my baby…

Rejuvenation is my favorite or at the very least my most played Meters album. I imagine to some not picking one of their three early albums on Josie would be considered sacrilege. what can I say? I just know when I want to hear some Meters this was the record I was most likely to play.

the first tune to grab me was obviously, Just Kissed My Baby. I was aware of it because it is one of the more sampled Meters songs. so many of The Meters songs are sampled for their drums, but Leo Nocentelli’s opening super funky guitar riff is likely the most sampled element from Just Kissed My Baby.

that might have initially drawn me in, but the opening People Say and the near 12 minute, It Ain’t No Use were just as responsible for me reaching for Rejuvenation so often when I needed some Meters. and let’s not forget Hey Pocky A-Way, covered so often by the Grateful Dead.

it’s hardly a hot take to suggest that The Meters belong in the Funk Pantheon with James Brown, George Clinton & Parliament - Funkadelic, Sly & The Family Stone and Prince. they deserve your full attention if you have yet to fully explore the spectrum of what funk has to offer. this is a good entry point if you want to check out The Meters.

have fun!
