Last night there was an Extraordinary meeting of #Wirral Council to agree their opposition to the #PeakCluster Carbon Capture and Storage (CCUS) project which plans to run a pipeline and associated infrastructure along the entire length of the peninsula.

There was a large public protest outside the Town Hall. This was reported on today's lunchtime BBC TV news.

I've just watched the entire Full Council session. It was mainly a positive event with agreement across the parties. The Labour Group accepted a "friendly" Conservative amendment to their motion and, despite some party and individual differences in opinion and approach, all were agreed that this pipeline is not good for the Wirral and that this CCUS approach is either unproven, risky or suboptimal.

Only one [recently defected ex-Tory] Councillor challenged the Net Zero and Climate Catastrophe assumptions which are central to National and Local Government policies; yet she supported the motions.

Petition: Pause UK offshore CO₂ storage projects and conduct full safety and legal review

We ask the Government to pause all UK offshore CO₂ storage projects until a full independent safety, environmental and legal assessment is completed. Some research suggests that injecting impure CO₂ can risk acid formation, toxic metal release, and long-term damage to marine ecosystems and aquifers.
