How You Act in Public Says a Lot About How You Feel in Private - Zsolt Zsemba

From holding hands to avoiding each other in public, here's what your behavior outside the bedroom says about how you actually feel.

Those of you who are so hip as to have a foot already in the post-http internet have the privilege of reading a new write-up on my #geminiprotocol capsule, while it is awaiting review and approval for publication on the BSD Cafe Journal!

#Retrocomputing conneisseurs may also find it of interest.

OK, here is the promised demo:

Stand by for a demo of Visi Corp Visi On on real hardware!

Yes, the fabled GUI whose demo at the 1982 Comdex sent one William H. Gates III screaming into the dev department to initiate the creation of Window 1.0!

So, it's 2026 and I've just had my ~30 year old Palm III given back to me. Batteries seem to have leaked, but cleaning the contacts has done the trick and it's working!

It's got IrDA and 9-pin serial, which none of my modern computers have, and no removable storage. How the hell do I get software on this thing in 2026 with a linux laptop? I've got a USB to serial dongle, just got no idea what software to use.

Thanks to the legend that is @mischa who helped me to get a working pf config going, I now have tethered internet acces via #OpenBSD  to the #PDA 🤩🤩🤩

Okay! Managed to get the iPaq -- kindof -- connected to #OpenBSD

So,

  • Ditch USB cable, wire in a DB9 connector into the cradle and use RS232
  • Run pppd with the below:
  • # pppd /dev/cua00 115200 noauth 192.168.55.101:192.168.55.100 debug nodetach connect 'chat -v -s "CLIENT" "\dCLIENTSERVER\c"'
    expect (CLIENT)
    CLIENT
    -- got it

    send (\dCLIENTSERVER)

    /var/log/messages says:

    May 15 11:41:04 pppd[23884]: pppd 2.3.5 started by USER, uid 0
    May 15 11:41:07 pppd[23884]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cua00
    May 15 11:41:10 pppd[23884]: local IP address 192.168.55.101
    May 15 11:41:10 pppd[23884]: remote IP address 192.168.55.100
    May 15 11:41:30 pppd[23884]: Modem hangup
    May 15 11:41:30 pppd[23884]: Connection terminated.
    May 15 11:41:31 pppd: Exit.

The 192.168.55.100/101 IP's are "best practice" for PDA's, as it is also the IP hardcoded into ActiveSync.

Anyway, all I think I need now is some PF rules to forward traffic on ppp0 to em0?
