Should I?” Speaker Johnson shook his head, but then said: “Congressman Neal Dunn, of Florida, had some real health challenges … and had had a pretty grim diagnosis.” “He would be dead by June,” the president interjected. “Okay, that wasn’t public,” the speaker said, with groans audible in the audience. Dunn with his own doctors at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, who performed emergency surgery. “The man has a new lease on life,” the speaker said. Rep. Dunn has served since 2017 as the congressman for Florida’s 2nd District, covering largely rural areas in the north of the state as well as the capital of Tallahassee and the beach community of Panama City. The Florida Republican announced in January that he will not be running for reelection but has denied rumors that he would resign. Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL) plans to retire early next week, just as the House GOP majority teeters on a razor’s edge with a 218-214 seat count and three vacant seats. A former Army surgeon, Dunn has dominated Florida’s 2nd district since 2016, which leans heavily Republican. His exit could make it even harder for Speaker Mike Johnson to pass legislation, as GOP members are already in a delicate position—losing just one would effectively derail votes, especially without vice-presidential tie-breaker support like in the Senate. Dunn's departure risks deepening legislative gridlock at a critical time. Could the democrats take the House before Monday?
