Mrs Joe and I grew up with gas stoves in our homes, and cooked for 40+ years on our own gas stove. Nine years ago we bought this house and an electric stove with a glass top. I’ve been cleaning the stovetop 4-5 times a week, depending on how splashy whatever we’ve been making was, so, give or take, 2300 times since we moved in. (1/6)

#ImaginaryNumbers were the downfall of any hopes I had for a career in science. Algebra was required for a major in any science. You had to not only take it, you had to pass it and my brain just couldn’t do it. Organic chemistry didn’t help either, but I’d already failed algebra twice so I didn’t really put much effort into it, as in studying. But I’ve held onto a broad interest in sciency stuff in general to this day.

When I was 5, I saw my dad laying on his back, on my parents’ bed. Mildly puzzled, I asked what was he doing? I’m thinking, he said. After a beat, I said, oh, and went on wherever I was going. It hit me like a brick. The moment is graven on my memory. It was the first time I thought about my thinking. What was it? How did it work? How did I do it? (1/10)
