I just reread The Thin Man after a long time. It reminded me of Seymour Melman's comments that at one time SOHO lofts were filled with light industry and NYC was where new products were invented and manufactured - production transferring elsewhere for high volume products that had tested. The (sorry #spoiler) murdered inventor in the book has a lab on 5th avenue. All that was priced out, deliberately by NYC real estate industry, the community that fostered Donald Trump.
