A declared conscientious objector since 1998, Sheliazhenko now faces trial on 13 May after being accused of justifying Russian aggression – based on a text that explicitly condemns the invasion.

“I am a citizen of Ukraine and a citizen of the world, seeking a very simple thing – peace in my country and everywhere else,” he says. “I’m not asking too much from humanity – just that every human being lives in dignity, and isn’t forced to participate in mass killing.”
