Gonna rattle off a few more Khans drafts while it's still around! Come chill if that's your jam
After my complaining yesterday I've had a couple of good games in my #MTGKTK sealed deck. Both of which I think played to something I'm good at doing, which is identifying when I'm in the beatdown position.
In particular, in many Magic games there comes a time when either player could be the beatdown, and that position naturally goes to whoever was on the play. But if one person decides not to seize the initiative, then the other person can take it away. This depends on a lot of factors, but I find it's the case that many players still default to turtling up and not attacking. (This is a really hard habit to break, as every player experiences if they keep playing.)
The deck I'm playing is good at generating a lot of token creatures, which plays well on both defense and offense, but I feel like if my opponents had decided to be the beatdown then the games would have gone very differently.
It might be time for me to put #MagicTheGathering away for a year or two. My draft+sealed win rate since the start of #MTGWOE is about 30% and it just hasn't been fun for quite a while. (I've been playing a bunch of #MarvelSnap this fall and enjoying it a lot more than Magic.)
I'd say it's because of the fast limited formats - and I do hate the fast formats we've had this year - but I haven't been doing well at #MTGKTK either.
My suspicion is that the much faster pace of formats being solved in the 17Lands era means that even the bad players on #MagicArena are consistently better than I am these days, and whatever edge I thought I had in playing the games (IMO my strongest part of limited) is being wiped out by my relative deficiencies in drafting and deck construction.
(More broadly, regardless of the reason, I think the player base is getting better and I'm not. And that's not a recipe for me staying in the game much longer.)
Khans is out on arena! Gonna do a few khans of tarkir drafts tonight, and see if I remember how that set works. Come hang out if that's your jam.
New blog post: Khans of Tarkir Arena Open https://roytang.net/p/40icbi7l/
Is there a definitive breakdown of WHY various art was changed for Khans of Tarkir on Arena?
Some were officially stated (Rakshasas), some seem obvious (problematic artists—but not ALL their work?), some can maybe be assumed (proper cultural representation??), and some are just baffling to me.
Also I don’t love some of the new ones but obviously that’s very subjective 🙃
Drafting Khans of Tarkir again has made me realize how much I missed environments where you don't feel hopelessly behind if you don't have a 2-drop.
Morph is a fantastic mechanic, but can you imagine how laughable the option of 2/2s for 3 would be in WOE limited? Or, praetors forfend, in ONE? You'd never do it. You'd die if you tried.
A side effect of not having drafted for months is that in bronze I can go 7-2 with this steaming pile of a deck.
