... a picture taken to see if anything would be visible. It might show a dust cloud but observations like this are not widely accepted (image artifacts are common). MSC is the Manned Spacecraft Center, now the Johnson Space Center south of Houston. Luna 7 is another example of a location we do not have reliable information for (and therefore is effectively impossible for us to find in LRO images). These maps show (top left) the general target region for these landers (each had its own smaller target within the ellipse), (top right) the Luna 7 region and (below) a zoom in to the area. There is a third place marked, taken from:

Musgrove, R. G., 1965. Microdensitometer analysis of Luna 7 impact. MSC Internal Note no. 66-ET-3, 15 Dec. 1965.

Next up in our story of Soviet lunar missions is Luna 7. This was another landing attempt - Lunas 4, 5 and 6 were landers too - but success still eluded Korolev and his team. Luna 7 crashed, but as with Luna 5 there are several possible places in the records. NSSDCA says " it impacted the lunar surface at roughly 9 N, 49 W (also given as 9.8 N, 47.8 W)". The first location is from Johnson, N. L., Handbook of Soviet lunar and planetary exploration, 1979. #moon #Luna7
