So here's a quick audio sample from someone who built the same carbon low-fi microphone I plan on building.

Then go to the Placid Audio site and listen to the Carbonphone samples. Sounds close enough to me. They offer this product with something called THE TONEBOX, which is just a 5 position EQ, and it's obvious. It's not doing anything magical. So I can EQ mine manually if I want to, to get the same sound.

More carbon mic elements from an SDF member who I don't know if they want to remain anonymous.

Remember these?

I'll be sending them some of my helicopter helmet elements in trade.

These Canadian military helicopter-helmet-mic carbon-elements arrived today from a friend in Canada. Much experimenting to come.

I got the carbon mic elements in this morning's mail from my friend in Canada. There is a part number stamped into the plastic, so I'll have to break out my magnifying glass and see if I can find any info on them.

The one I have in my hand is stamped "8-65" so I wonder if that is a date code, and this was manufactured in August of 1965.

I'll post some pics of this in a bit. First I need to eat a very late breakfast.

Just tracked the carbon mic elements from my friend in Canada, and they're just up the road. Should be here tomorrow.

Here's a basic circuit I found on GroupDIY for powering a carbon mic capsule with phantom power. The people in the thread said it works, and there were some posted sound samples, so here's hoping. I made this with some spare parts I had in the back of a drawer. Looks more vintage with those big resistors.

Another project I have been thinking about for a while:

There is a product on the market called The Carbonphone. It's a low-fi mic using an old telephone mic element, for when you want that certain sound. I was gonna buy one, then I figured I could make something similar. I was going to start with my brother's D104 CB radio mic, but I can't find it. Then someone offered to send me some Canadian military helicopter headset carbon mic elements for FREE. I'm super psyched.
