Michael Wolff, the bestselling author, recounted that his first encounter with Jeffrey Epstein took place on a 2000 flight from New York to the TED conference in Monterey. He was invited aboard Epstein’s private jet along with other TED attendees and “three model‑tall young women,” and Wolff immediately noted a “dodgy” atmosphere that felt far outside the norm.
During the flight, architect David Rockwell asked Epstein about a Caribbean island he was developing. When Rockwell pointed to a section of the plans that resembled a cloister, Epstein flatly replied, “That’s where the girls stay.” When Rockwell later inquired about a large open area, Epstein answered, “That’s where they comb each other’s hair.” The conversation foreshadowed the allegations that the island—Little St. James—became the hub of Epstein’s sex‑trafficking operation, where victims as young as 12 were allegedly abused and sometimes tried to escape by swimming.
After the TED event, Wolff again rode with Epstein to Los Angeles, where the financier offered him a choice between the “petting zoo” or the cockpit. Wolff chose the cockpit, later describing the experience as an “oh‑my‑God moment.” He now publishes a Substack series detailing these interactions, while his own ties to Epstein have drawn scrutiny amid the broader revelations about the “Lolita Express” and the criminal activities that took place on Epstein’s private planes and islands.
