Musical Interlude: I'm a longtime fan of Canadian classical troupe Quartetto Gelato, and this is from my favorite of their albums, dedicated to the Orient Express, and with pieces illustrating various stops along the legendary train's route. We have London, Paris, Munich, Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest, and finally Istanbul, which this represents. And I never thought accordion could sound so exotic. (Yes, they're oboe, cello, violin, and accordion...)

Musical Interlude: OK, now for something fun. Carl Stalling did music for countless cartoons, most famous for his work with Warner Brothers, but also Disney and other studios. He did a new score almost weekly for 22 years!

Stalling was a master of the "musical pun," inserting bits of popular or classical music into his scores to accentuate the humor, but his original work was also vital. In just a few bars he could set tone and atmosphere like few composers can.

I've long felt that light composers don't get enough credit, and Stalling definitely doesn't! Listen to his work and realize how much of his music has permeated our culture...
