Penmanship: in #LifeBefore smartphones, paper was the best way to send messages, and you had to write clearly to be understood.

Print out letters in your favorite font, say about 16 point. Lay a thin sheet of notebook paper on top and trace the letters until you can make the shapes without the aid of the printed version. Take your time and focus on precision.

Do the same with common words so you can see how the letter gestures interact.

I'm going to declare the weekends the time for #BasicSkill and #LifeBefore, and try to ask y'all about it every weekend, but

the rest is up to you, fediverse! (You're my only hope!)

I'll write up the things I can think of - starting & maintaining a fire three ways, baking bread, making rice, sewing by hand. Canning. Making sauce.

Life before the internet. Life before cable TV. Life without city water.

What've you got?
I've got an Idea! πŸ’‘

When I was a kid, I loved the Foxfire books, knowing about basic skills that people took the time to interview about - and parts of life that seem as far away as a fantasy novel even though they were in living memory when I was a child.

So - that's always happening. Basic skills & stories of Life Before This are always vanishing.

Help them not vanish! Write up a
#BasicSkill you know, so that others can learn it. Talk about #LifeBefore - cable TV? Internet? Electricity?
