In July 1939, with Europe on the brink, Gandhi wrote to Hitler from Sevagram, calling him “the one person in the world who can prevent a war which may reduce humanity to the savage state.”
What moves me is not that the letter failed, but that Gandhi still believed even the architect of violence had a sliver of choice left—and that it was his duty to speak to that last thin shard of humanity.
