The AWS Survival Guide for 2025: A Field Manual for the Brave and the Bankrupt

Welcome, intrepid cloud explorer! You’ve decided to venture into the AWS jungle in 2025, where the services multiply faster than your monthly bill. Forget those quaint relics like S3, EC2, and RDS that everyone always gravitates towards—despite being the lion’s share of AWS revenue, they’re practically stone tablets now when it comes to interest and attention. Let’s talk about navigating the real AWS experience.

Last Week in AWS

Tell me you're a hype-driven exec who doesn't have a clue about gaming and shouldn't be in your post without telling me… 🙄

"Asked about SAG-AFTRA's strike for better AI protections, Amazon Games Boss claims AI 'has nothing to do with taking work away' from actors because 'for games, we don't really have acting'"

As @Quinnypig said in the #LastWeekInAWS newsletter: "Maybe that's true for Amazon Games, which also doesn't really have any hit games"

😆

AWS also now has Passkey support as a second factor for their console logins. This is great, and I've already added it to one of the AWS console accounts I have access to. You should probably use this.

"AI powered query generation" sounds a whole lot like "natural language search" and I'm here for it when it gets applied to #aws CloudTrail. https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2024/06/aws-cloudtrail-lake-ai-powered-query-generation-preview/

Just now catching up on #LastWeekInAWS because it's...been a week...but https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2024/03/aws-compute-optimizer-ec2-rightsizing-recommendations/ is pretty cool. Basically lets you tell Compute Optimizer that your app will fall over if you have less than X amount of RAM left, and Compute Optimizer will fit RAM less tightly to compensate.

Another #lastweekinaws / @Quinnypig tidbit: #aws #cloudfront has 600+ "embedded POPs" inside ISP networks. You know, the thing Akamai has been doing since the 90s.

It's a Monday, so I'm reading through @Quinnypig's #lastweekinaws. So I'll be posting highlights here.

For example, an RSS feed for certificate expirations, in case...erm...your LetsEncrypt cert renews but doesn't apply 🙃
