With my party's gear all upgraded the quest monster wasn't much trouble. It also helped that they got a couple levels through all of that.
It is still funny that after the battle they acted like it was a hard fight when only a couple of characters barely lost a few HP. 
Also, is there anyone in Class VII that doesn't have some kind of secret?!?

I am not sure if I am misremembering it but in the games previous to Trails of Cold Steel I never really had to grind for gear upgrades.
While in Cold Steel I just found myself having to do it in order to beat a quest monster.
To be fair the grind doesn't feel that bad.
Also, I am still struggling to figure out the best quartz for my current party.
Still early game though. So everything will click eventually.
