Weite Landschaften, Pferde, eine Ranch fern jeder Stadt. Das ist die Ikonografie des Westerns. Doch unter dieser Oberfläche arbeitet ein anderes Genre. Dieser Film ist viel mehr ein romantisches Familiendrama. Ein Melodram, das den Mythos des Westens nur benutzt, um von Liebe, Verlust und vollkommen zerstörerischer Männlichkeit zu erzählen. Mit einem All-Star Cast, darunter: Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn und Julia Ormond. (3Sat, Wh.)

Ein Werwolf-Film als Business-Satire, ein Erotikthriller als Midlife-Crisis-Parabel, und vor allem ein Starvehikel für Jack Nicholson, der hier weniger spielt als sich selbst zelebriert. Ich mag diesen Film, weil er ein Echo aus meinen Neunzigern ist und gerade weil er sich einer klaren Tonlage verweigert. Darin liegt seine sehr eigentümliche Freiheit. (ZDFneo, Wh.)
