Imagine if child care centres were run by community based not for profit providers whose purpose was to serve their communities, not make money for shareholders. Imagine if regulations, funding, staffing levels and pay rates recognised the skilled & important nature of the work. Imagine if providing quality care to kids was a respected career.

Imagine if childcare funding had never become an uncapped resource that could be tapped by companies whose interest is to generate profit.

Imagine if the community childcare sector had been listened to, all those years go, when they warned about the consequences of changes to the funding model.

Instead we have a sector that could be a vital part of the networks that hold communities together generating huge profits for key investors, and grist for another scare campaign telling women it’s all their fault & they should really be at home with their children.

Whose interests are served here? Follow the politics. Follow the money.

Paedophiles exploiting Australia's broken childcare system as safeguards crumble

The true scale of abuse in Australia's childcare centres has been hidden. With 200,000 pages of previously confidential files, police tip-offs, and evidence from whistleblowers, Four Corners exposes the reality.

This funding model is endlessly cruel.

Huge profits have been made. Vulnerable people continue to be persecuted. Governments pretend to be surprised.

All because ‘the market does it better’ became a tenet of faith. And demonising ‘bludgers’ was good politics.

Shame.

Exclusive: Government warned over ‘legal basis’ of welfare system

Australia’s $6 billion system of outsourced employment services is on the brink of collapse due to policy, leadership and technology failures that new documents, obtained by The Saturday Paper, reveal were flagged years ago. Senior officials at the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and ministers were first made aware of the flaws when the Coalition created the Targeted Compliance Framework (TCF) in 2018.

The Saturday Paper

The actions & managerial styles of Professor Bell & Ms Bishop represent the managerial model of university administration - that sees staff & students as units to be manipulated in service of KPI outcomes, regardless of effects on the quality of research or teaching, or on institutional culture, student experience or the well being of staff - working as intended. These leaders were appointed because that is what they do.

Heartfelt thanks to Dr Liz Allen for offering her story. And to all who have supported her & who continue to struggle, & support others struggling, to survive in a toxic culture. We see you.

How the Australian National University fell — and continues to fall —from grace

The prestige of the Australian National University is fast fading. It must now respond to explosive allegations.

ABC News

Yet another example of ‘it’s the funding model, kids’.

Wherever there are uncapped government #subsidies to private businesses the opportunities for profit are huge. Industries shape themselves around maximising throughput / turnover & profit.

Where universities are not funded adequately to perform their functions of offering education & research, the role of highly paid executives is to implement systems that bring in maximum income - often by rorting uncapped programs & screwing the people those programs are meant to serve - in order to create funding streams to keep basic services afloat. Staff are screwed. Students are screwed. Vice Chancellors & aspiring leaders are paid astronomical sums to abandon their ethics.

Add to this a visa system that invites those who can pay to take endless courses as a path to permanent residence & we have a perfect storm.

This is a failure of governance.
