A inspiradora história de Mats Steen, o jogador norueguês que encontrou amizade e propósito no universo de “World of Warcraft” enquanto enfrentava uma grave doença degenerativa, ganhará uma adaptação cinematográfica. Intitulado “Ibelin”, o longa será dirigido por Morten Tyldum — indicado ao Oscar por O Jogo da Imitação — e contará com um elenco estrelado por Anthony Hopkins, Toni Collette, Stephen Graham, Charlie Plummer, Isabela Merced e Maisy Stella.
Baseado no blog “Musings of Life”, escrito pelo próprio Steen até sua morte em 2014, aos 25 anos, o filme narra a trajetória de um jovem com distrofia muscular de Duchenne, que perdeu gradualmente os movimentos do corpo, mas encontrou uma segunda vida através de seu alter ego digital, Ibelin, dentro do jogo da Blizzard Entertainment.

A produção marca o reencontro das produtoras Vendôme Pictures e Pathé, responsáveis pelo vencedor do Oscar CODA – No Ritmo do Coração. O roteiro é assinado por Ilaria Bernardini (Citadel: Diana), com revisões de Hossein Amini (Drive). A Vendôme e a Pathé também financiam o projeto, que tem Philippe Rousselet, Fabrice Gianfermi, Jérôme Seydoux, Tyldum e Guri Neby como produtores, e Sarah Finn (Tudo em Todo Lugar ao Mesmo Tempo) como diretora de elenco e produtora executiva.
As vendas internacionais serão conduzidas pela Black Bear, enquanto a CAA Media Finance cuidará dos direitos de distribuição nos Estados Unidos. As filmagens principais estão programadas para ocorrer na Europa durante a primavera e o verão de 2026.
Segundo a sinopse oficial, “Ibelin” é descrito como “uma celebração da vida — terna, engraçada e profundamente emocionante; uma história familiar sincera entrelaçada com uma aventura épica que explora o poder da amizade e os laços invisíveis que nos conectam”.
A história de Steen ficou mundialmente conhecida após o lançamento do documentário “A Vida Extraordinária de Ibelin”, dirigido por Benjamin Ree e lançado pela Netflix, vencedor de prêmios no Festival de Sundance 2024 e no Peabody Awards. A comoção em torno da obra levou a Blizzard a eternizar o personagem de Steen dentro do jogo, adicionando o Lorde Ibelin como NPC em homenagem ao jogador.
