my one regret in life is that I have never been able to track down volumes two or three of this masterpiece

Ok, I promised to talk about some books that really are important to me. I'll use the hashtag #ImportantBooks, because I don't know how many there will be.

Let's start with "The Pillow Book" by Nagiko Sei Shōnagon, in English translation.
I bought this book, because it inspired Peter Greenaway to the movie with the same title. It took me two years to read it, but it's so full of beautiful thoughts.

Some quotes:

"To wash your hair, apply your makeup and put on clothes that are well-scented with incense. Even if you’re somewhere where no one special will see you, you still feel a heady sense of pleasure inside."

"There is nothing in the whole world so painful as feeling that one is not liked."

"After all, the cherry blossom blooms every year, but does anyone find it the less lovely for that?"

"Things That Give a Clean Feeling
An earthen cup.
A new metal bowl.
A rush mat.
The play of the light on water as one pours it into a vessel.
A new wooden chest."
