Houston leaders indicate they won’t implement new safety measures around bayous following string of deaths

Mayor John Whitmire said there’s no “failsafe” solution, “other than everyone should be smart.” City officials cited homelessness, alcohol and mental health as potential contributing factors in the recent deaths.

As Houston’s cycling infrastructure continues to be a hot topic among city residents, Houston Parks Board President Beth White said coordination between departments is important to bridge the gap between park trails and city streets.

Houston Parks Board president wants expansion of pathways for cyclists and pedestrians 

Although the nonprofit parks board has no jurisdiction over on-street bike lanes, its president and CEO, Beth White, said the department tries to collaborate with the City of Houston. The administration of Mayor John Whitmire has halted the city's years-long expansion of its bike lane network.

Houston’s Brays Bayou Greenway getting new trails as part of $6.6 million project

The project, a collaboration between the Houston Parks Board and the office of Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones, will create 4.4 miles of additional trails while installing seven new pedestrian and bicycle underpasses along the greenway, an ADA-accessible trail connection to a nearby METRO bus stop and a new memorial plaza near Mullins Drive.

Houston’s Sharpstown neighborhood getting long-desired trail along CenterPoint easement

The Houston Parks Board, with funding from the Southwest Houston Redevelopment Authority and Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones, is constructing a 1.8-mile trail in existing green space. The plan is to eventually connect it to other trails to the north and south.
