So I was just curious what people think about this:

There's a chance that the HS2 Northern Leg (ie to Manchester and maybe up to Leeds) could still happen given enough private investment
There's quite a few companies that stand to gain from HS2 being built, for example Railfreight companies like GBRf that would prefer not to have to deal with the WCML and ECML being as congested (and whose parent company are a fairly large investment company that makes up part of FTSE 100, and which makes £6.5bh a year), alongside this you also have the tourism agencies for the northern areas of the UK.

I guess I'm hopeful because I really would love HS2 to be something that actually links the country and not a "oh you can go from birmingham to get a eurostar really quickly but if you're in the rest of the UK you have to use the far slower WCML/ECML services".

One of the major issues with this however, as
@samuele963 pointed out when I was talking to him about this, is that the Tory government are already trying to remove safeguards and sell off the land that it would've been built on which would obviously scupper this chance.

Maybe if Labour get in they could, not, do that, but whether it's too late or not or whether Labour actually would do that (given how much Starmer goes back on promises) is hard to say imo

What are the odds that the HS2 route will be converted to a toll road for green powered vehicles? I wouldn't go so far as to say a road for all vehicles but hey.
