George Washington’s American Monarchy | History Today

@augieray I'd take #GeorgeIII over Pres. Trump any day of the week.
@GiftArticles If our Founders had realized we'd wind up with a mad king anyway, they could have saved themselves from a war and just stuck with Mad King George III. #Kings #GeorgeIII #tyrants

The former king of the American Colonies, shown here on a 1797 coin, suffered from a mysterious mania that caused him to speak for hours without pause. His vocabulary became “creative and colorful”.

Wikipedia says 1810 was the height of George III’s popularity. At that time he was virtually blind, in pain, and fell into “distress and crying every day ... melancholy beyond description.”

@gtconway3dg What's to parse? His words speak more clearly than ever his usual word salad does. Trump wants and intends to be a dictator. If democracy ends on this note, there's no question that we should have just kept George III. #GeorgeIII #AmericanHitler

TIL: Herschel wanted to call the planet he discovered "George", after the British Monarch at the time.

This was overruled, and instead it was called Uranus, after the British Monarch at the time.

Bowling Green, New York City.
"The Bowling Green is located at the foot of Broadway and is the city's oldest park. In 1626 it was used as a drill ground in front of Fort Amsterdam. In 1776, an equestrian statue made of lead of King George III was set up in the center of Bowling Green but on July 9th of the year it was torn down and made into bullets for the use of the patriots. It is now the center of the most important business district in the city."--printed on verso. New York, N. Y.

George III was the third British monarch of the House of Hanover and the first of them to be born in England and speak English as his first language. He was the longest lived and longest reigning British monarch up to that point, although his record was subsequently beaten by his granddaughter Queen Victoria and then by Elizabeth II.
