Visitor Center Delayed Opening at 10 am Thur. Dec. 4th due to Snow.
The Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center hours today will be 10 am to 4:30 pm to allow park staff time to clear snow from parking lots and sidewalks. Area roads and park roads are plowed but icy. Please drive slowly and with caution if you are visiting the park today.

Medano Pass Primitive Road Impassible to Most Vehicles at Crossing Two
Driving the Medano Primitive Road is NOT ADVISED at this time. Erosion and deep mud near the second creek crossing are making the road impassible to most vehicles. There have been many instances the area is blocked by a stuck vehicle. All vehicle operators will be responsible for their own vehicle (1/2)

What to Expect During Government Funding Lapse
In general, other areas within this park remain as accessible as possible. Visitors should be aware that while some services are unavailable visitors are expected to protect park resources by following all regulations and “Leave No Trace” practices. As of Sunday 10-12-2025, the Visitor Center and WNP Park Store are open (1/2)

Trail CLOSED Between Visitor Center and Montville Trailhead
The access train that leads from the visitor center to the Montville and Mosca Pass Trails is CLOSED due to construction. Hikers may start at the Montville Trail parking lot. Visitor Center access remains open.

Medano Primitive Road CLOSED Due to Flood Damage Between Castle Creek & Medano Pass
Flooding on July 22nd covered many sections of the Medano Primitive Rd. with debris, and some sections are washed out. Park crews are currently repairing damaged sections. Crews will reassess conditions on Friday 7/25 for possible (1/2)
