James Brown. Get up, I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine

So the Funky50 ends where it started with the Godfather of Soul & his urtext of funkiness, Sex Machine. The James Brown band delivers one of the greatest 5mins of funk ever. Its got that funky drummer, call & response vocals, stuttering guitar with that bubbling bass & a fabulously sparse production; yes 'the way I like it, that's the way it is'!

The 24-Carat Black. Ghetto Misfortune's Wealth

This classic of sparse funkiness is a great bit of spacey stuttering grooviness. Driven by a subtle & sinewy rhythm, with a meandering horn arrangement & showcasing some conversational vocals, this doesn't quite sound like anything else I've been listing.

Those who like a bit of acid jazz will recognise this from a sample used by the Young Disciples on Step Right on.

Johnny Guitar Watson. A Real Mother For Ya

Johnny Guitar Watson delivers a killer funky groove, with a fab rhythm arrangement & some great horn stabs alongside Watson's usually laid back vocals. Edging towards disco this retains the funkiness that typifies Watson's best work & if you like this, check out Superman Lover, his other funky masterpiece. What a groove!
