@juliusgoat.bsky.social these people are so goddamn stupid, the student debt that they were flipping out about Biden forgiving (the loans that actually got forgiven) happened because those forgiveness provisions were in the contract that the students signed when they took the loans.

They could Google the federal student loan master promissory note and read it themselves. I had a screenshot I would drop on them for the longest time but I got tired of doing the alt text for it because it’s a lot.

I can’t speak to how student loan contracts read before 2003, but since long before that date federal student loans can be forgiven for the death of the benefiting student or borrower, their disability or the borrower’s disability if it’s a PLUS loan, public service loan forgiveness was always part of the contract that the government drew up for as long as I can remember, and completely discharging the loan for fraudulent schools or schools that close while students are pursuing their degree has always been part of the contract.

None of this is new or a gift or a handout. It has always been in the contract.

There are also a whole bunch of good reasons to forgive the crushing student debt for people, my favorite reason is that a bankruptcy discharge of debts and a clean slate/second chance/fresh start is a constitutional right. And if someone hadn’t fought really hard to make these loans undischargeable in bankruptcy years ago people would be able to do a bankruptcy and get a fresh start as the Constitution entitles them to.

Are people who oppose bankruptcy protections against the American constitution? Why do they hate America and Americans so much?

I’m pretty sure that the boomers could discharge their student loans in bankruptcy, I think sticking people with them for life was a bush era thing, and I’m embarrassed I don’t remember so I’m going to go look it up now.
