Finished putting page 90 of 223 transcribed pages of my long ago relative George Rice's #FirstInternationalPolarYear diary on the Web.

It seems much of the work involved in making expeditions from Fort Conger was in setting up caches of supplies that others would be able to use.

George Rice and the First International Polar Year Expedition

I got through 31 pages of the types transcripts of George Rice's diary, and started revamping the website to host them.

July 1881 to Oct 1881 of one of the members of the USA #FirstInternationalPolarYear expedition are now up and can be read.

George Rice and the First International Polar Year Expedition

The transcript produced of my ancestor George Rice is 223 pages long. I finally managed to sit and work a bit at it tonight. 15 pages gone through to make sure what {tesseract} pulled out is a faithful reproduction of the text. So 6% checked, in the space of an hour or so. Much faster than doing my own transcription of the old newspaper articles.

Dear reader, it was the case that indeed this was unusual, and thick ice conditions the years following would indeed keep their relief ships from getting to them. 😓

George Rice and the First International Polar Year Expedition - 1881-07-29:1881-08-02

I counted the number of pages of the newspaper extracts of George W Rice's diary, and there are 100.

Between yesterday and today, I've managed to get through 4. They are on Day 21 of their expedition, and about to depart Greenland, I think for the final time.
