Zeller is a Christian witch and yet there is an absolute delight of a practice in the book that centers around swearing. Fuck yes! #FediOccultBookClub

There is an entire chapter about disability-centered tarot. I like what Zeller says about the sun card.

“This card invites us into joy and celebration. As disabled people, we are often viewed with only pity (at best). This card stands in opposition to that idea. Instead, the sun card says, “We are human. We are magnificent. We are magick. We have hopes. We have dreams. We have beauty. We have joy.” – Kandi Zeller #DisabledWitchcraft #FediOccultBookClub

“My body is enough and magnificent and disabled all at the same time. I declare this body honored, beloved, whole, sacred. I declare this body worthy of care and attention and rest and joy and all emotions. I carry this power with me always, from this day forward, past, present, and future.” – Kandi Zeller #DisabledWitchcraft #FediOccultBookClub
“I am magick. I transform spaces of exclusion by my very presence as a disabled person. I claim the aspects of the craft that will lead to the inclusion of all of me and all other marginalized voices. I reject those parts of the craft that are based on ableist, sexist, racist, classist, homophobic, transphobic, or capitalist assumptions. I will transform the craft like all who have gone before and all who will come after. I enter this conversation. I take up space. This is my power.” – Kandi Zeller #DisabledWitchcraft #FediOccultBookClub

For context, toxic positivity and spiritual bypassing are major factors that color the narratives of disability that non-disabled people carry and share about us, especially when faiths come into play. They are overabundant fuel sources for inspiration exploitation, commonly known as inspiration porn.

If you are new to the phrase, here is an article that explains it well and cites many examples: https://stimpunks.org/glossary/inspiration-exploitation/

Inspiration Exploitation

Inspiration porn. What's that? It's a portrayal of people with disabilities as one-dimensional saints who only exist to warm the hearts and open the minds of able-bodied people.

I was ready to read with slightly gritted teeth about a gratitude ritual in a disability witchcraft book, but major props to Zeller for immediately disclaiming that the ritual is not about toxic positivity or spiritual bypassing. Calling that stuff out as unhelpful at best wins big points with me.

“Gratitude is about honoring what is, not sweeping it away.” – Kandi Zeller

So, more about Kandi Zeller’s Disabled Witchcraft, which I will admit to having reread. It’s easy to do. It’s a short book, the digital files are very accessible, and I was commuting and out of podcasts.

If hashtags and threads aren’t your thing, feel free to mute #FediOccultBookClub.

“Disabled people are amazing foragers. We’re scrappy and have to piece together medical teams, remedies, conflicting and interacting diagnoses, insurance, HSA accounts, bargaining with billing offices, switching providers, complex schedules and changing factors affecting our spoons for the day, accessible transportation, etc. Why should green witchery be off limits when disabled people are this good at foraging?” – Kandi Zeller

“Connection to the earth is not a privilege for the non-disabled few. It’s the birthright of all humans—indeed all living things—upon this wonderful, stardusty planet.” – Kandi Zeller
