Unfortunately, the *only* time Approval Voting was mentioned in this hearing was by a citizen on the very small opposition panel, who said "AV, another offering under this bill, degrades the sacred duty of voting to a popularity contest..."

Good grief. Well, I guess if you're principally an approval voting supporter, all publicity is good publicity?

I really wish I could emphasize to all participants in that hearing that IRV does not eliminate vote splitting, and AV does!

MPs are voting to get rid of first past the post in mayoral elections. Doing the same at a national level would be an antidote to Reform UK, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

@Gurre

That's exactly what happened. Labour didn't win; the 'Tories lost.

The UK electoral system guaranteed that people were afraid to vote other than Labour in case it allowed the 'Tories back into power.

@dstndstn @gwynnion Our voting system (first past the post #endFPTP) and various suppression of representation (#uncapTheHouse) , and voter suppression , and lack of campaign finance regulation, all work together to currently ensure no other parties can emerge.

Today ERS (Electoral Reform Society) has published an in-depth report on the recent election, A System Out of Step: The 2024 #GeneralElection. The 2024 General Election was unprecedented for all the wrong reasons.

The most disproportional election ever, in terms of how we voted and the parliament we got. The first UK #election where four parties received over 10% of the vote, and five parties received over 5% of the vote. The lowest combined vote share for Labour and the Conservatives in the era of universal suffrage.

It is clear from the general election that we are all voting as if we already have a proportional electoral system. Yet, Westminster's #FirstPastThePost system can't cope with this new multi-party reality.

The report cuts through the headlines on the election and looks at how Westminster's First Past the Post system blocks voters from getting the results they want.

An “exciting” thing about moving to a country with a much higher position in the Democracy Index is that my vote still doesn't count!

All thanks to first-past-the-post.

See you at the polling station.

2. Biden got a lot of votes in the 2020 General election, true, but impossible to say how many of those were FOR Biden as compared to votes AGAINST a 2nd term for one of the worst presidents ever. That comes down to our busted voting system ( #EndFPTP ), but it is what it is, and because of that you can't, with much seriousness, say that those votes should count as people voting FOR Harris.
