Dates for this year's summer dig in Forty Hall confirmed for July 12th - 26th.

We'll be back in the woods by the lime tree avenue to try and relocate these Tudor palace remains, last seen 60 years ago.

Public open day Saturday 18th July - come and see how we get on!

Slowly working our way down through the post-palace demolition and landscaping deposits.
No in-situ structure yet but lots of interesting architectural fragments including this splendid and unusually shaped polychrome Delft tile - one of the largest pieces ever found at Elsyng.
No positive ID on it yet but suspect early C17th,

Tudor Gatehouse Turrets (Composite) - 3D model by enfarchsoc

Composite model of the 2023 and 2024 trenches which discovered the inner gatehouse of Elsyng Tudor palace in the woodland of Forty Hall, Enfield, dug by the Enfield Archaeological Society in June 2023 and 2024. The inner gatehouse separated and controlled access between the outer court, where most of the palace staff lived and worked, and the inner court, which contained the more high status buildings including the royal apartments themselves. From 16th century documents we know that the gatehouse was an imposing four-storey structure that was reached by a grand bridge across a moat. We now know that, in keeping with the style of the time, the gatehouse had polygonal turrets on its corners, although especially in the case of the 2024 turret it appears to have been too small to have functioned as a staircase and so was likely a purely decorative feature, and evidence also suggests it was a late insertion into the structure. The 2023 dig was featured on Series 11 of the BBC’s ‘Digging For Britain’. - Tudor Gatehouse Turrets (Composite) - 3D model by enfarchsoc

Revealing the floor of our new gatehouse turret.
Approx. six courses below ground and compacted bricks so densely laid the joints are almost invisible.
Interpretations on a postcard please.
