OUCH WHAT IS THAT ENDING #DutyAfterSchool

🇰🇷 Earlier this spring, sci-fi teen war drama (?!) #BanggwaHooJeonjaengHwalong, aka #DutyAfterSchool, tried to discuss... well, a lot of things, as you can see. Some of it quite timely. Here is my series-wide review.

If you're looking for an action thriller drama this one may not disappoint you.
There's plenty of scary scenes, badass ratatata shootings and some unexpected twists.

On the negative side I hate it when things are left unexplained and there were 3 major questions left unanswered. Not minor details, unfortunately.

I'm adding another toot with spoilers.

Vote: 8/10

Duty After School - Wikipedia

The young adult, apocalyptic K-drama “Duty After School” (방과 후 전쟁활동 파트) recently concluded, and it only received a lot of negative feedback because of the way the live-action adaptation ended the story.

Fortunately, there are at least five possible alternate endings. This was presented by DikshaG in the article entitled “Duty After School: Exploring Alternate Endings for the Heart-Wrenching K-Drama”. Read: https://www.moving-stories.net/duty-after-school-exploring-alternate-endings-for-the-heart-wrenching-k-drama/

Check it out, and maybe, you'll appreciate the live-action adaptation if you choose one of the five alternate endings.

Duty After School: Exploring Alternate Endings for the Heart-Wrenching K-Drama - Moving Stories

Korean dramas are known for their gripping storylines and emotional endings that leave fans satisfied. However, sometimes the ending of a drama can be

Moving Stories
Wow. #DutyAfterSchool (#방과후전쟁활동파트) is my new worse #YoungAdult (ages 18–27) #apocalyptic live-action #drama.

They are turning 20 and still act like 10-year-olds, from a country deeply rooted in hierarchy, respect, education, training.

It had a strong start. I gave it a good score. The last four episodes were delayed. Unfortunately, it went downhill by episode 8, and totally bottomed by the finale episode.

#Kdrama #tv 6 out of 10 from me.

---

I don't even know what is the message they want to send.

1. Was it about CSAT and how toxic it is?
2. Was it about the aliens?
3. Was it about the importance of military training?
4. Was it about the current state of Korean high school students, and how they are bratty and lacks patriotism?

Yes, it is
#fiction. That is understandable!

However, I think they painted their late teens in a very bad light, and that is so unfair.

Consider this, in my country (at least back in the 90s, my school years), by Grade 10 (16 years old), we underwent ‘Citizen Army Trainig’ (it still is a military training). We are not at war, but we have to go through that or we won't graduate high school. We didn't complain. And we perfectly understood the importance of hierarchy.

Yet, in this K-drama, kids turning 20 were complaining every episode. They were invaded by aliens, and all they cared about are their vanities and CSAT. They have to be lured with earning bonus points for their CSAT just so they'll go through it!

#AllOfUsAreDead (#지금우리학교는) is a far better apocaplytic YA drama.

I am deeply sorry. Even though it is fiction, depicting high school students like that was far too unrealistic. AOUAD did not do that at all, and yet created a very good story!

Oh. I remembered another thing. I seriously can not believe their Commander, having seen how bratty the students are, did not teach and train them about the importance of hierarchy and following orders. He did not even assign hierarchial ranks, all he did was assign a ‘class president’ or an ‘assistant’ who doesn't have much authority.

It was actually a miracle that they survived for weeks after their Commander sacrificed himself.

Wait, was this show supposd to be a comedy?

Just watch AOUAD, or something else. Skip ‘Duty After School’.

I''m only at Season 01 Episode 03, and I'm liking this show: #DutyAfterSchool (#방과후전쟁활동파트). As of this post, the show is on a season break, there are 4 episodes left.

Synopsis (mine): A year ago, extraterrestrial spheres appeared on Earth. The spheres only floated and did nothing. As part of the government of Korea's preparation—these spheres are aliens after all—Grade 12 (3rd year High School in South Korea) were also drafted. This show follows the story of the young students drafted to be trained to protect their country, if and when a war breaks out.

(EDIT: corrected latest episode)
