Cal Fire just lifted the open burning ban for Sonoma County. SRA areas can now do open burns with a Cal Fire permit (available on line) and, of course, your BAAQMD notification. Always call REDCOM before you burn if you don’t want 6 engines showing up at your house. #Sonoma #Fire #DefensibleSpace #FireSafe

CALFIRE: Research suggests that creating a noncombustible buffer of five feet around your home can significantly improve the likelihood that it survives a wildfire. Creating a combustible-free Zone 0 that extends a minimum of five feet from each structure or, if applicable, an attached deck reduces the chance of wind-blown embers or radiant heat spreading the fire to your home. Remove bark and replace wood fencing and other potential fuel for sparks with noncombustible alternatives.

Tip: Future Fork Mini

We have a number of large Douglas Fir trees growing on the windward side of the house. Some of the cones they drop are picked up by the mower but many are not. Lately I have been thinking about the fuel load those cones represent if a fire comes through. Those cones sure burn good when they are dry.

So bit by bit I have been scooping those cones up and dumping them along a wet swale in the pasture. The pic shows the scooper I use which is so lightweight I can 1-hand it. This also works great for picking up fir branches without bending over which is something my back appreciates.

“California has long had the strongest defensible space rules in the country. Now, it's drafting rules that would make it the first state to limit the vegetation directly next to buildings. In areas at high risk of wildfire, plants within five feet of a house would be strictly limited” #wildfires #climate #defensiblespace #landscape #California https://www.npr.org/2023/10/20/1205320768/wildfires-defensible-space-rules-plants-california
