Dataharvest

I loved attending #DataHarvest after a 2-year hiatus. I was part of four different sessions, as the developer tinkering with OpenAleph, for @darcdataresearch.

I was happy to have published two write-ups about the first decently-sized feature I worked on, for OpenAleph: making audio & video files searchable and publishing the (AI generated) transcription.

The technical blog post goes into quite a bit of detail about how I did this (and what blew up in my face): https://openaleph.org/blog/2025/05/AI-Transcriptions-in-OpenAleph:-the-First-Steps/68450c9c-78e7-4e3f-8743-40ad6ba7b4f9/

AI Transcriptions in OpenAleph: the First Steps – OpenAleph, the versatile open source search platform by the Data and Research Center – DARC, originally started by OCCRP as Aleph

We need OpenAleph to be able to transcribe audio and video files, and we're turning to AI to help us do it. We're in store for a bumpy ride.

That's a wrap on Dataharvest 2025. We’ll remember the talks. And the waffles. 💕

Can you believe it? I'm on my way to the data harvest conference for the very first time.

Looking foward to interesting sessions, coffee & chat and Belgian fries 🍟 . I'll also be speaking together with Michael Anthony and Polina Uzhvak about the use of satellite data in journalism 🛰️ .

Get in touch if you want to talk!

I’m unfortunately missing out on engaging in person but if you are interested in expanding your data-driven stories via social media monitoring, you may find this resource useful: https://data-knowledge-hub.com/ #research #dataaccess

family reunion this year is at a place using #AirBNB . Apparently they want *everyone* coming to create an account, complete with DOB and legal names....so we can "Join the TRIP!"

And my family is apparently to inept to send me the ad sans such foolishness.

Room for Mr. John Smith, party of 2 you say? Born 1/1/1999. Why yes, know him well.
