Is there a way to imagine development w/o exploitation?
Fundamentally comes down to the system it’s being developed w/in, the way ownership of ideas are translated in societies. Technology looks to move rapidly (move fast break things) and is not beholden to ethos except for culture of accumulation and profit. Doesn’t account for harm caused by a lot of tech. It’s a larger question than the willingness to be constrained by law. Nanjala Nyabola. #StochasticParrotsDay #dataLibrarians #dataLibs

Is there a way to imagine development w/o exploitation?

Go back to basics on fundamental human rights, because it’s a lot less slippery than the word “ethical.” Interrogate/audit AI fiercely on fundamental human rights. Sarah Andrew. #StochasticParrotsDay #dataLibrarians #dataLibs

Evaluating AI related policy and risk really shows who has power, and highlights the gaps of power across the world. Nanjala Nyabola. #StochasticParrotsDay #dataLibrarians #dataLibs
Can we become enlightened if we can just produce answers without developing our own thoughts? Belzie Mont-Louis #StochasticParrotsDay #dataLibrarians #dataLibs
Thinking about what we can do. How can we counter tech companies not being transparent? Teach students how to critically evaluate tech solutions in terms of who it impacts, how is it developed, who developed it, who is the invisible labor, how transparent is the company, is the transparency honest. We really need a framework on how to integrate this into instruction.

For people who actually work on ML/AI and (human) language, the claims of the LLMs being able to support 200+ languages is in reality incorrect. Which leads to other companies who were exploring working on language support to think that the problem is already solved. But it isn’t. Asmelash Teka #StochasticParrotsDay #dataLibrarians #dataLibs
What should we advocate for to stop data worker exploitation? Solidarity is transnational, but there are local contexts, so need to listen to workers and believe them when they tell us what they need in terms of their health, work environment, etc. Dr. Milagros Miceli #StochasticParrotsDay #dataLibrarians #dataLibs
