Edmund Sears, a Harvard Div graduate, had served a large congregation for 7 years when he suffered a breakdown and had to back off to part time ministry. He was an abolitionist, pacifist, and believer in full equality between men and women.

His famous hymn is about holding onto hope in "weary world" where it's hard to find. The depression and despair in it is easy to miss until you look for it
