Die 2015 entdeckten #Comammox-Bakterien sind in der Lage, das stickstoffreiche #Guanidin als einzige Energie- und #Stickstoffquelle zu nutzen. Diese Bakterien produzieren im Vergleich zu anderen Nitrifizierern nur geringe Mengen des Treibhausgases #Lachgas. Diese Entdeckung könnte helfen, landwirtschaftliche #Lachgasemissionen zu reduzieren, indem gezielt Comammox-Bakterien in Böden gefördert werden.

The recent discovery of the comammox bacterium might prove pivotal in a new and improved approach to wastewater purification that will be more efficient according to research carried out by Pieter Blom. Mr. Blom will receive his Ph.D. on the subject from Radboud University on 4 April.

The genome analysis in this study by Sabita Ghimire-Kafle, Matt Weaver and Annette Bollmann is a great example of combining tools in #KBase (kbase.org) and #IMG (img.jgi.doe.gov) for functional studies of #microbial and #metagenomes.

Metagenome assembly/binning in KBase and functional analysis of a resulting MAG in IMG/M (plus experiments) showed that Nitrospira sp. BO4 is a complete ammonia oxidizer (#comammox).
