While the rest of of his family was at Cape Canaveral to watch the landing of space shuttle #Columbia, Sean McCool was in a college computer lab listening to a live #NASA TV feed when he realized something wasn't right. He called the only phone number he had memorized, that of another astronaut that was a friend of his father. The friend told him, "It's bad.
Twenty years ago today (January 16, 2003), the US Space Shuttle Columbia left earth for a 16-day research mission. During re-entry on Feb 1st, 16 minutes before a planned touchdown at Kennedy Space Center, Columbia disintegrated as it reentered the atmosphere over Texas, killing all 7 astronauts on board.
