Today's #clueoftheday in #crypticcrossword land goes to Picaroon in the Guardian:
"Little girl following Jack’s elder sister (6)"
Definition: "elder sister".
Took me a little while as I was side-tracked by "Jill" for sister (as in "Jack and Jill") -- before I'd made the other connection to what "elder sister" means here.
It's always nice to be reminded that "Jack" == "Tar" == "AB" (all referring to synonyms for naval officers).
"elder sister" is referring to Nuns, hence: "ABBESS" is the answer. Yep "BESS" is perfectly fine for a "little girl"'s name.
Fun!
