SEOUL--Torrential rain battered South Korea’s greater capital region for a second day Thursday, leaving at least one person dead, flooding or damaging hundreds of roads and homes, and forcing more than 1,000 people to evacuate.
Firefighters in southern France were battling on Wednesday to contain the country’s biggest wildfire so far this year, said local authorities. At least one person has died so far in the wildfire, while nine others were injured. More than 1,800 firefighters have been deployed to tackle the blaze.
Officials in Romania say flash floods in the northeast of the country have killed at least one person. The torrential rainstorms that triggered the flooding happened overnight into Monday. Hundreds of people were forced to leave their homes as Romania’s rescue services deployed teams in the hard-hit counties of Neamt and Suceava. Helicopters and firefighters rescued residents. Some of them were trapped in their homes by floodwaters. Authorities said that 890 people were evacuated from Neamt County. The Department for Emergency Situations said that first responders found a 66-year-old man dead at the bottom of a stream in the town of Neagra. Authorities also released images showing raging muddy floodwaters strewn with battered vehicles and other debris as well as damaged homes.
"Northern China has experienced record rain in recent years, exposing densely populated cities including Beijing to flood risks. Some scientists link the increased rainfall in China’s usually arid north to global warming."
Those scientists might be on to something.
