In #Indonesia, deforestation is intensifying disasters from #SevereWeather and #ClimateChange

"Government officials blamed the floods on heavy rainfall, but environmental groups have cited the disaster as the latest example of #deforestation and environmental degradation intensifying the effects of severe weather across Indonesia."

#ClimateChange makes underlying problems worse, and there are plenty of those in #RiverDeltas

"Our analysis shows that certain risks are more critical to some deltas than others. These risks include land subsidence, increasing population density, intensive agriculture, ineffective governance and a lack of capacity to adapt."

River deltas are threatened by more than climate change – leaving hundreds of millions of people at risk

The world’s coastal deltas are home to hundreds of thousands of people – but they’re now under threat.

"The causes of such #flooding are multifaceted. Heavy #rainfall, inadequate #drainage systems, and the incapacity of rivers to manage high discharge levels are primary contributors. #Urbanisation plays a significant role, with encroachments on major water bodies and ecologically sensitive zones exacerbating the situation.

Not just Chennai, a dozen Indian cities might go 3 feet under water

The flooding brought by cyclone Michaung has highlighted the threat to Indian cities from climate-induced disasters. Not just Chennai, a dozen Indian cities could be under three feet of water by the end of this century.

" The report argues that there are a number of root causes pushing Earth toward perilous #RiskTippingPoints, including human-caused #GreenhouseGas #emissions, prioritizing profits over environmental protections, and colonialism."

It is seldom only one thing that makes us live in conditions that are brittle to disturbances, such that a relatively small event can tip the system into catastrophe, like when #ClimateChangeIsTheLastStraw .

#ClimateChangeIsTheLastStraw. Even the non-native grasses that burn so well are only a symptom of a much deeper underlying issue:

"This historical and modern #plantation economy has taken a tremendous toll on #water in particular, draining Indigenous ecologies of their natural moisture. #Lahaina, once known as the Venice of the Pacific, has been transformed into a parched desert, which is part of what has made it so vulnerable to fire."

"Scientists have also prominently mentioned the role of non-climate influences in the intensity of the firestorm, such as the introduction of highly combustible nonnative plants, as well as weather patterns that happen naturally."

@michaelwong

The articles in the thread suggest two things that make us vulnerable:

1. We're pretty good at protecting ourselves: we invented air conditioning, we build levees, have have sump pumps in basements

2. But, or maybe partly because we're so good at protecting ourselves, we started to live at the edge of the possible - others may call it the precipice. Our physical systems became brittle: we *count* on a/c, on those levees, etc.

"Researchers have also long drawn attention to the way that Canadian #forestry policies moved away from traditional and #Indigenous practices of #PlannedBurning which safeguard valuable timber resources and people. Regular, controlled burning clears the forest understory and reduces the risk of larger fires spinning out of control, but this had been stopped in much of the country."
