"Glenn L. Martin was born on #onthisday in 1886 in Macksburg, Iowa. An early aviator and aircraft builder, Martin started the Glenn L. Martin Company in 1912. The Martin company produced numerous types of aircraft, including the Martin M-130, which inaugurated scheduled transpacific airmail service in 1935. The Glenn L. Martin Company merged with Lockheed in 1995 to form Lockheed Martin Corporation. Image: Pan American Airways, Martin M-130 “China Clipper”, c. 1940. Gift of Marion L. Yates in memory of John A. "#Onthisday in 1935, the inaugural transpacific Pan American Airways Clipper service landed in Manila from California carrying 110,865 letters. In Manila, the crew, led by Captain Edwin Musick, was treated to an elaborate welcoming ceremony with an estimated 250,000 people in attendance. The flight to Manila covered 8,210 miles with a flying time of 59 hours and 48 minutes. These days, a nonstop flight from SFO to Manila takes around 15 hours. Our exhibition detailing the entire adventurous endeavor, "China Clipper", is on display pre-security, in the Aviation Museum and Library in the International Terminal. The Aviation Museum and Library is open from daily, 10am to 4:30pm. ""%!(EXTRA string=In 1923, Igor Sikorsky founded the Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation (later renamed the Sikorsky Manufacturing Company). One of the most important early Sikorsky aircraft, the S-42, was developed to meet the requirements of Pan American Airways’ president Juan T. Trippe for a large, long-range, trans-oceanic flying boat. Designed by Igor Sikorsky, with input from Charles A. Lindbergh, it could carry a crew of four and thirty-two passengers up to 1,200 miles. In 1935, the S-42 named “Pan American Clipper” was modified for extended range to survey the Pacific route and was later used for regular service on the Manila–Hong Kong leg. An S-42B flew South Pacific survey missions. We have a new historical marker!

The unveiling of the “Arrival of the Pan Am China Clipper in the Philippines” historical marker earlier today at the Manila Yacht Club makes this the first time we officially have an aviation-related historical marker from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines! (Surprisingly, Philippine Airlines still doesn’t have its own historical marker yet.)
