A federal judge in Chicago ordered authorities to improve conditions at an immigration facility after a group of detainees alleged they were kept in “inhumane” conditions and sued. The Wednesday order for the facility in the west Chicago suburb of Broadview will be in effect for 14 days. It requires officials to provide detainees with a clean bedding mat and sufficient space to sleep, soap, towels, toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, menstrual products and prescribed medications.

Illinois advocates have sued federal authorities over alleged inhumane conditions at a Chicago-area federal immigration facility. The lawsuit filed Friday alleges that people at the Broadview facility in the west Chicago suburbs are being denied their right to access legal counsel and are being subjected to “inhumane” conditions. Attorneys representing people previously held there also say federal agents have denied detainees food, water, hygiene and medical care. The attorneys further say people have been coerced into signing paperwork they don’t understand. Local advocates have for weeks been raising concerns about conditions at the facility, where tense protests have played out.
